CMX JumpStart: Phoenix
Summer Surprise! It's another JumpStart, and this one is named after the great city of Phoenix, Arizona.
CMX JumpStart Phoenix is a centered, two-column, 760 pixel fixed-width layout that has many appealing design features. There is a striking contrasting color scheme, vertical navigation in the right column, and "swap image" rollovers that use a caching technique that corrects flaws in Internet Explorer. The JumpStart filters styles for various versions of Internet Explorer, including separate style sheets to address issues found in IE 6 and below versus IE 7.
Of course Phoenix meets the W3C standards for CSS and XHTML, as well as the WAI accessibility requirements, too.
The package includes the following:
- Documentation
- An extension to easily install Phoenix files from the New Document dialog box
- Seven tutorials
- Four style sheets: one main, two for Internet Explorer, and a Design Time style sheet
- Two Fireworks PNG documents for branding the graphics
- A starter page
Phoenix is available for $29.99 to non-members, but is absolutely free to CMX subscribers. Read more about how to make it yours.
- CMX JumpStart Phoenix article for nonmembers and members who would like to read more about its features and see a modified Phoenix design.
- CMX JumpStart Phoenix article for members and for those who would like to purchase Phoenix now.

When the Legend Won't Wrap - Revisited for Firefox 3

Designers AND Developers...
So there's been a pretty decent sized debate going on through the webosphere. Designers should know how to code. Developers should know how to design (or shouldn't need to design). I considered weighing in on the 37 Signals blog -- but the comments were already closed. Call me slow (yes, (...more)
Orphaned copyright bill in the USA
There is a bill which passed in the US congress which is H.R. 5889, the Orphan Works Act of 2008. I'd contacted my congressman about the bill and my concerns over the bill. I've received a reply which I would like to pass on here:

WOW - TODCon slipped by so fast ... it is over too quickly...
Anyways, this year we had an incredible line up of speakers, a bunch of wonderful attenders and the usual great time at the after events (i.e. dinner!). Florida is still hot, wouldn't mind it being a lot cooler, (...more)
