Well, after 13 months, 4 betas, and 3 Release Candidates, PHP5 has finally hit the shelves of the Open-Source market!

I can bet that some of you PHP freaks out there are pretty excited about this new release. I can tell you, I can't wait to start playing around with all the cool new features that are available.

XML support has been rewritten from the ground up, and all the PHP XML extensions are built around the libxml2 librray, which is available online (for free, of course) from http://www.xmlsoft.org.

For those of you that are into Web Services (who isn't these days?), there is a brand spanking new built-in SOAP extension for interoperability with Web Services.

By far, the coolest addition of all, is a new MySQL extension named MySQLi for developers using MySQL 4.1 and later. This new extension includes an object-oriented interface in addition to a traditional interface; as well as support for many of MySQL's new features, such as prepared statements.
