CMX Weekly NewsletterCheck the News! It's Official... And Looks OddAdobe's logo is currently resting awkwardly at the top of Macromedia's website. Adobe and Macromedia's websites are sharing the same banner that dramatically explains how "Adobe and Macromedia are One", before transforming quickly into the Adobe logo. The acquisition is final, and Adobe is wasting no time in connecting their brand to the "brand formerly known as Macromedia." While a lot of good could come out of the acquisition, many folks are only cautiously optimistic. It's definitely the end of an era, but at Community MX we're looking forward to a lot of exciting opportunities for us and our subscribers. Stephanie Sullivan has more to say on this topic on our blog. Give The Gift of KnowledgeCommunity MX is once again offering Holiday Gift Certificates. Surprise your resident webhead with a gift certificate subscription to Community MX. You can now easily provide all of the benefits of a full CMX subscription for 3 months, 6 months or a full year. Maybe We Should Just Go To The Movies On January 5thOn January 5th, 2006, the next big attack of the Sober Worm is supposed to hit. At that time, Sober will email itself it out from any Sober-infected computer to specific servers which will presumably then send itself to millions more people, in an attempt to infect even more computers. While this variation of the Sober Worm is not specifically malicious - it does not do anything to your computer besides use it to send email - it has been known to wreak some havoc on mail servers. A security firm pointed out that the January 5th date is the 87th anniversary of the founding of a precursor to the Nazi Party. Just one more reason to hate this particular Worm. Read more about it at TechWeb.com. Sony to Change Name to "Hacker Haven"We mentioned a few weeks ago that CDs released by Sony Music in the United States and Canada installed spyware onto user's computers, possibly allowing hackers to gather private information about the user. An internet rights group recently found out that was only a small part of the story. Apparently, the "infected" CDs could allow Windows machines to be completely compromised by hackers, allowing them full control over your computer. Sony has stopped the practice of putting the offending software on their CDs, but that hasn't stopped the lawsuits from coming in. TimesOnline.co.uk has more on this story, and a link to eff.org, which will help you identify the "bad" CDs. Are You Saying That FreakyDoo McZeekyFatFlop is Not a Real Person?According to a study from the Government Accountability Office, more than five percent of the registered domain names in the United States are registered using obviously faked contact information. Next they'll try to tell us that those people who use fake contact information when registering their domains do so to avoid spam and unnecessary phone calls. Oh... actually that's exactly what this Yahoo.com article is saying. |

Great Quotes:"There never was a chip, it is said, that Bill Gates couldn't slow down with a new batch of features." — James Coates More Pesky Bots for AIM UsersThe newest threat to AOL Instant Messenger users is being called "IM.Myspace04.AIM." It spreads itself by sending itself as an instant message to everyone on your Buddy list. If they click on the attachment in the message, they end up with the worm as well. The interesting thing about this AIM worm is that if your buddy replies, the worm itself will reply too, by saying "lol no its not a virus" or "lol thats cool." Because it replies to your buddy, there's a greater likelihood that your buddy will believe it's you sending the attachment and click on it. PCWorld.com tells the full story. Once Again: Do Not Trust Everything You Read On The InternetWikipedia.org takes its encyclopedic information not from books or time-tested sources, but regular old folks like you and I. On any given day of course, you or I might feel a little cheeky and not tell the entire truth, or just plain fib. That's what happened when one anonymous editor decided to edit the biography of John Seigenthaler Sr. Seigenthaler was, among other things, an adminstrative assistant to Robert Kennedy. In the edited version of Seigenthaler's Wikipedia entry, it was strongly suggested that he had something to do with both John and Robert Kenney's deaths. The information has since been changed on the Wikipedia website, Seigenthaler is still non-plussed. Read more about it at Wikipedia.org. Hi, My Name Is [Insert Name Here], And I'm An OnlineaholicDo you suffer from internet addiction? As odd as that sounds, it seems that there are way too many people out there who can't seem to break away from the internet. Small wonder, what with online chat and compelling websites like Community MX, people just have so much to do on the internet that takes them away from "real life." While some psychologists argue that addiction to the internet is not as harmful as addiction to drugs, there are people who have made the news because they died due to neglecting themselves in favor of staying online. News.com has an interesting article on this relatively new disorder that people are afraid to label as such. If CBS Falls In Line, It Will Be Just Like The Old DaysNBC has followed ABC into delivering their television shows over Apple's iTunes. You'll now be able to watch shows like Late Night with Conan O'Brian, The Tonight Show and even Dragnet using iTunes, at $1.99 a pop. NBC is getting a little sweeter deal than did ABC though. They'll be getting their own branded pages and opportunities to sell more of their own product over the iTunes network. Check out the full story at MediaPost.com. Microsoft CEO May Have To Part With .000000000000000000000001 Percent of His CashSteve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, says that he doesn't get a free XBox from Microsoft, despite the position he holds with the company. We almost shed a tear when Ballmer stated "Thanks to the wonders of Sarbanes-Oxley, management does not get a free Xbox 360." Anyone wanting to start a collection for Ballmers children are urged to get over it - and quick. Read the rest of this woeful story at WashingtonPost.com. |

Brought to you by ytmnd.com. This Guy Has Some Serious BaggageIf you want to sell something on eBay, it helps to get people's attention. Brian Sacks was simply selling a pair of leather pants that he never ended up wearing. He not only ended up selling the pants for a little over one hundred dollars, but he also ended up parlaying the story behind his pants into about sixteen minutes of fame. You can still see the eBay listing, and read more about the history of Brian's pants at Banterist.com. Give The Gift Of An iWipeWe thought the idea of taking an old Apple SE30 and making a "Macquarium" out of it was brilliant, but that was so... 90s. These days the hip thing to do is to create your iWipe. Yep, hollow out that old computer and make it work for you in the bathroom. TechRepublic.com has pictures of its construction, with running commentary by its creator. |

Confirmation EmailsMany sites and services require that you confirm your email address when creating accounts or subscribing to services for the first time. Although there are a fair number of ways that you can attempt to validate a supplied email address, the only real way to be sure of its validity is to use a confirmation email. In this article we'll take a look at how you can create such a confirmation system using PHP and MySQL. The Meaning of ~ (tilde)The inventors of ASP.NET took a different approach to solving the problems inherent in using absolute and relative URLs. They introduced the concept of tilde. The simplest, briefest definition of tilde is that it is the root of the application. The root of a website is, by definition an application root, but not all application roots are site roots. Huh? Yeah, the explanation gets a little hairy, but once the concept sinks in, I think you'll agree you'll begin to wonder how you ever lived without tilde. Tips, Tricks and Dirty Cheats! This week's Tip, Trick or Dirty Cheat is courtesy of Danilo Celic , CMX Partner Get Out Of ClassYou may notice that if you working within a styled element, such as a paragraph with a background color on it, such as the tip sections within our articles, that when you're done with the paragraph and you hit enter, Dreamweaver helpfully creates a new paragraph styled with the same class as the paragraph you were just in. This may not be what you want - I know that it isn't what I'd prefer most of the time. Simply hitting CTRL+ Enter (CMD+Return on Mac), will "break you out" of the classy paragraphs. Would you like your tip published? Submit it to tips@communitymx.com. That's it for this week. Stay tuned for the next CMX newsletter! |
