The Bitmap Auto-Crop Command for Fireworks
by Kim Cavanaugh - 07-Dec-06
Reader Level:

Have you ever labored over a repetitive task and wished that there was a way to speed things up? You can often accomplish a great deal more if you just work out a more efficient way to get the job done. Such was the case recently when I needed to make a number of screen captures then crop the captured images to different sizes and shapes.

Of course, there are excellent screen capture programs out there, but in this case I ultimately found it easier to crop my images in Fireworks so I could do some additional work. After a few renditions of copy, paste, select, cut, delete, paste, and then trim I was definitely ready for something easier.

In the end, I created a custom command that takes most of the work out of the selection and cropping process. With the Bitmap Auto-Crop command that you'll find here you can take any bitmap selection no matter its size or shape and quickly remove all of the image except for the selected area, leaving you with a canvas that is sized based on your selection. And the entire process takes only seconds and one quick trip to the Menu bar. Heck, you can even assign a shortcut key to the command to make it even easier to use.

The Complete (Almost) Vectorized Webding Catalog Free!
by Kim Cavanaugh - 06-Nov-06
Reader Level:

Way back in December 2003 I wrote a free article here at Community MX called Fun with Webdings and Wingdings which is consistently in the Top Ten of our most viewed tutorials. As of this writing the tutorial has been viewed over 55,000 times. And why not? First of all, the tutorial is free, and secondly, Webdings and Wingdings are lots of fun to play around with. They can also serve some really useful purposes. Depending on the font in that family of "Dings" you can get all sorts of little miniature pictures by just typing in the correct character using the Fireworks Text tool.

Recently I needed some small icons for a design project so I started up Fireworks and created my own reference library for the Webding font family. And while I was at it, I decided to go ahead and convert all of the text objects into vector shapes. What you'll find here is a somewhat later version of the same file that is a tad better organized. You can use this file for your own design purposes or use it as a reference for creating your own library of characters.

What do you get in terms of images? Well, you'll have to open the file up to see all of the little pictures that Webdings create, but here are a few samples.

Sample webding characters

In addition there are two source files included in this download—both a Flash and a Fireworks source file that make use of the webding vector shapes included in the library for your examination.

The Polaroidizer for Fireworks 8
by Kim Cavanaugh - 17-Jul-06
Reader Level:

If you had a chance to read my recent article, Create a Polaroid Photograph in Fireworks, you saw how (relatively) easy it is to do this on your own. You can create two simple rectangles, punch the smaller rectangle through a larger rectangle, apply some simple drop-shadows, and Voila! Fairly easy frames that can be applied over the top of a photograph to give the appearance that the picture was snapped with a Polaroid camera like you see in the collage below.

Polaroid example collage

While the techniques described in the earlier tutorial were fairly easy, wouldn't it be even better if you could automate the process? Since you might not remember all the things that need to be done to achieve the effect how about it you could just run a command and have the frames created for you? You could then scale and place your own images and get the final outcome you see above with a minimum of muss and fuss. Now you can.

When you download the support files for this article you'll find three commands for Fireworks 8 that will create the Polaroid frames for you. Just unzip the files and save into the Commands folder in your copy of Fireworks 8 and instant Polaroid frames are just a few clicks away.

CMX Expiration Dates
by Danilo Celic - 24-May-05
Reader Level:

The CMX Expiration Dates extension allows you to set dates for files you work with that expire. If a page is beyond its expiration date, when you next start Dreamweaver this extension will let you know that you have a file to be edited. This functionality can be useful when you need to update a page (or set of pages) on an occasional basis, or even on an ongoing basis. For example, you may manage the company's knowledge management system, and you want to make sure that your content contributors are alerted when their content needs to be checked for "freshness" to ensure that the information contained on the pages they cover does not go stale, then the Expiration Date extension can help you acheive your goals. Or if your home page should be updated on Mondays to reflect the next set of featured products that arrived just this weekend, then you can set the expiration date for the home page for the upcoming Monday; then when you start Dreamweaver up on Monday morning, Dreamweaver will alert you to the fact that you need to update a file (in this case the home page). You can then edit that file, publish it. If desired, you can then set the expiration date for the file for the following Monday, to lather, rinse and repeat the cycle of updates as necessary.

Introducing the CMX CSS Snippet Collection - Part One
by Sheri German - 01-Apr-05
Reader Level:

CSS Positioning layouts are hot, and many people are trying to make the transition from the mostly reliable, but non-semantic, table-based layouts we've all used for years. CSS 2.1 provides great features for laying out pages, and the specs for CSS 3 indicate that some day the future of design on the web will be ever brighter indeed.

We here at CMX try to make the learning curve as painless as possible with our many CSS tutorials and articles. Now we'd like to offer you a diagnostic tool that spares you some typing and memorizing. We are proud to introduce the CMX CSS Snippets Collection. Snippets, as you may well be aware, are bits of reusable code that paste as blocks or around selections with the click of an insert button.

This article includes an extension for installing part one of the collection into the Dreamweaver Snippets panel, and a tutorial that explains the problems and solutions that the hacks correct.

Part One of the CMX CSS Collection includes the following:

CMX Table Sorter Extension for Dreamweaver
by Rob Williams - 14-Mar-05
Reader Level:

The ability for users to re-organize tabular data to better suit their individual requirements has become an almost expected attribute of digital data. Many web sites currently provide this ability by relying on server-side coding and database queries to constantly re-sort the data before it's transferred to the client. This causes both increased server load and inconvenient delays for users as they wait for the data to be reloaded.

The CMX Table Sorter behavior allows you to provide those same sorting abilities for your HTML table without having to waste time and resources on server-side sorting methods.

This extension has been updated 6/27/06. Please download the zipfile and replace the old extension with the newer one.

CMX Extra Buttons Dreamweaver Toolbar Extension
by Danilo Celic - 25-Oct-04
Reader Level:

Sometimes, just making things more accessible makes a program easier to use. That's the thinking behind CMX Extra Buttons. Many applications have a Print button, and a Spell Check button on their toolbars, however, Dreamweaver does not. This extension adds these buttons to the Standard toolbar. You may work with various versions of a file whether to just to test out an idea that came up, or see if the client's request will take 30 minutes, or 30 hours. For situations such as this, a Save As and Save Copy As buttons are also part of CMX Extra Buttons.

CMX PPT Image Exporter Extension for Dreamweaver
by Danilo Celic - 14-Oct-04
Reader Level:

The CMX PPT Image Exporter* extension for Dreamweaver MX and Dreamweaver MX 2004 makes it easy on the developer to quickly pull out the slides of a client's PowerPoint presentation as images for use within the client's site. You can then use the exported images within linked HTML pages, JavaScript-ed slide shows, or even import the images into Flash and create your own mechanism for navigating through the slide images.

To kick off the process, all you need do is browse to a PowerPoint file and a folder to export the slides to, choose an image type, from the five available, and specifiy the resulting size of the images, and with the click of a button, you're done.

*Note: Requires Windows operating systems (tested on Windows XP and Windows 2000) with Microsoft PowerPoint installed. Sorry Mac-heads.

CMX Quick MXP Creator
by Paul Boon - 07-Oct-04
Reader Level:

The CMX Quick MXP Creator extension allows the user to create mxp files for files selected within Dreamweaver's Local Site/File Panel. The created MXP can then be shared with other Studio MX and MX 2004 users using Macromedia's Extension Manager. Complete sites or selections of files and folders can be selected and CMX Quick MXP Creator presents the user with a simple dialog allowing the Name of the MXP, along with Author, Version and optional Comment to be entered. Any Folder selected is recursed including all sub folders and files within the resulting mxp file. Upon installing the MXP the user is asked for the location to extract the files, and files are then extracted to this location, with any folders and sub folders being created as needed.

CMX Put By Extension - Dreamweaver Extension
by Danilo Celic - 01-Oct-04
Reader Level:

Dreamweaver has a number of useful features when it comes to transferring files to your remote server. You can select files and put them, and even select recently modified files to put them. One thing that it cannot do is to upload all files based upon their file extension. Perhaps you've received a bunch of updated images that are strewn about several folders in your site. You could upload just those folders, or even try to synchronize your site, but you could be uploading a bunch of files that either don't belong on the remote server, or maybe aren't ready to get pushed. If you wanted to upload just the images in your site, Dreamweaver couldn't help you, at least until CMX Put By Extension showed up.

CMX Clean Up Attribute
by Paul Boon - 27-Sep-04
Reader Level:

CMX Clean Up Attribute allows the user to clean up (remove/clear) an attribute from all elements within the current document.

Example:
Remove would remove the class attributes from all tags/elements in the current document currently assigned a class atribute.
Clear simply removes the value assigned to all class attributes from all tags/elements assigned a class attribute, so class="avalue" becomes class="".

CSS Styles Dreamweaver Extension
by Tom Muck - 15-Sep-04
Reader Level:

Dreamweaver MX 2004 made great advancements in CSS rendering. However, some of the tools could still use a little workflow adjustment: there is no context menu item for CSS Styles for form fields, tables, divs, or images. This extension adds that feature, saving a step for those people who use context menus to speed their workflow.

CMX Default Doc Extension
by Paul Boon - 30-Aug-04
Reader Level:

The CMX Default Doc extension allows the user to change the default file extension assigned to Untitled Documents associated with a certain type of file. For example, by default all newly created HTML documents are assumed to have a file extension of htm. Using CMX Default Doc Extension a user can tell Dreamweaver that by default all HTML documents should be saved with any of the file extensions that are associated with HTML documents. All Dreamweaver Document Types are supported. New file extensions can also be added for existing document types allowing dreamweaver to apply Code Hints and Code Coloring to a file extension not usually supported, as well as making use of Design View or Code View features. Also supported is the ability to reassign an existing file extension to a different supprted Document Type.

CMX Design-time Extension
by Paul Boon - 26-Aug-04
Reader Level:

When Dreamweaver MX shipped, it included a new feature called Design Time Style Sheets. This command allowed the user to turn on and off different style sheets during the development of a document. However, it was limited to one document at a time. The CMX Design-time Extension changes all that, allowing you to apply your Design-time styles to a document, a selected folder, or an entire defined Dreamweaver site.

Flash Your Cookies

by Tom Muck - 22-Jul-04

This extension adds two fields to your Document toolbar that allow for easier navigation to the errors in your page.

CMX Insert Shared JavaScript Extension
by Danilo Celic - 10-Jun-04
Reader Level:

When you're working within the Dreamweaver Configuration folder, there are quite a few JavaScript files that are useful for building extensions within the Shared folder. You may need to link to one or more of them in order to complete that fabulous extension that you're working on. Good news is that Dreamweaver makes it relatively easy to link to JavaScript files that are within the same site that you're working on (you do have a site defined for each of your Configuration folders on your system, right?). Unfortunately, the Shared JavaScript files can be located within multiple folders in several areas of your system. If you wanted to link from your HTML file within the user's config folder, but needed to link to a JavaScript file that comes standard with Dreamweaver, such as the ListControl class file, you'd then have to go traipsing around your hard drive to locate, and link to that JavaScript file. No more...

CMX CF Upload Size Server Behavior
by Bill Horvath - 09-Jun-04
Reader Level:

CMX CF Upload Size allows you to set a maximum file size - in bytes - that a user may upload. If the file they attempt to upload exceeds your limit, they are given a message explaining that their file is too large. This Server Behavior is for ColdFusion only.

CMX Create Include
by Danilo Celic - 26-May-04
Reader Level:

Dreamweaver is a great tool for working with dynamic pages, it even displays one common code reuse tool, includes, in its design view for visual editing. It also has tools for adding includes to your pages. However, one thing missing is a tool that exports a selected section of your page's code into an include, and then automatically links that include to the page. The desire to avoid having to first cut out the code from your page, create a new page, paste in the cut code, save the new include, and then go back into the original document to then link that include in the correct place, is what led to the creation of CMX Create Include. This extension enables you to quickly export selected code from a document, and make it into an include.

CMX Insert Camtasia Video Free!

CMX Current Column
by Danilo Celic - 31-Mar-04
Reader Level:

You've seen it time and time again, whether in ColdFusion apps, or client side debugging: "Error at line 34, column 125". Sometimes you'll get a visual clue as to what bit of code you're looking for, but that isn't always helpful. Dreamweaver helps, but only a little. You can turn on line numbers ( View > Code View Options > Line Numbers ), and get quickly to the correct line number. But determining which character is at column 125 can be a chore. That's where CMX Current Column comes in. With it, you'll get an indication of which column you're insertion point is currently located at.

Inspiration comes quickly, and when it beckons, you have to, just have to, start working on it. Anything that gets in its way is just frustrating. This is where the Open Studio Apps toolbar comes in. While this toolbar won't help bring on inspiration, it will help you to get to work on it when it arrives. This extension adds a toolbar to Dreamweaver that contains buttons that will allow you to open ColdFusion Administrator, HomeSite, Fireworks, Flash, or FreeHand without having to sort your way through the maze of applications listed on your quick start toolbar.

CMX Document Path Toolbar
by Danilo Celic - 07-Jan-04
Reader Level:

Dreamweaver tells you which page you have open by indicating the folder the file is within and the file name. Many times, this isn't enough information in which to determine which file you are working on, especially if you work with multiple sites and folders that are named similarly. CMX Document Path toolbar helps you sort out which file is from which site, and exactly where within the site that file is located.

CMX Get Put All Open
by Danilo Celic - 19-Dec-03
Reader Level:

Maybe you're working on a set of files and you want to make sure you're editing the latest live versions. Or perhaps you find yourself working with quite a number of related files. When you're done, you have all the files opened and need to upload them all to the live server. You could just select each one in the Files panel (Site panel in DWMX), and upload them individually, or you could use the Select Recently Modified command to upload the files. If you've only worked on one set of files today, you could try the Select Newer Local and wait for ages as Dreamweaver compares every file in your site against the remote file modification date.

CMX Command Constructor
by Danilo Celic - 05-Nov-03
Reader Level:

Creating Dreamweaver extensions, is a little like building web pages; essentially, you have HTML and JavaScript interacting with the user. Since there are common elements to every extension, most extension developers have a template that they use as the basis of every new extension. I found myself doing this time and time again; making a copy of my basic template and then editing the file to get what I needed as a starting point. The desire to avoid these repetitive steps led me to create CMX Command Constructor. This extension enables you to quickly build a framework for a Dreamweaver command to jump-start your extension.

The extension allows for viewing of installed extensions information, including all the info displayed by Extension Manager, plus a little more. However, CMX Extensions Info takes things a little further, it also provides a way for the user to view the install date of an extension and a nifty little feature that allows for user-entered notes to be stored for each extension so that those notes may be referenced at a later date.
